Understanding Natural Movement In Hair

Each head of hair has beautiful things that it naturally does. When we work with and encourage the hair to do its natural movements well, then we end up with easier hair that looks great and gets healthier and happier over time-- equaling less stress for us and less stress on the hair.

An important part of understanding your own hair journey, or guiding others through theirs is zooming out and seeing the context of HOW THINGS BEGAN and the need for a NEW STARTING POINT & CHANGE OF APPROACH.

All hair has Natural Movement to it—cowlicks and whorls; it can hug the head naturally or stand out from the head naturally; it falls forward or kicks back; the neckline moves upward, or inward, or downward or to the side; the strands have natural bends or coils or kinks, etc.

The Products we use play a crucial role in the success of our curls, especially when we aim to have longevity between cleanses. They also play a lot into the overall health of our hair and scalp.

The size of your natural curl groups (the amount of hairs in each one) is one of the unique Elements of your hair.

We can take advantage of this fact when we want to do the quickest, easiest process of defining and setting the hair up to dry (most people’s goal).

The Curl Rehab Process is the most in-depth and supportive way of finding your true curl groups and encouraging them to dry/live there. Not all curly people need to do this process because healthy curls don’t need this much involvement to do their thing, yet I believe it is helpful for all curly people to know this process for times when their curls are confused and need some support.

When your curls are confused, then this is the process you can do to break them out of their confusion.

I believe all curls have the ability to Air-Dry and look good, though having the option to speed up the process can be helpful on multiple levels.

  1. Definition & Volume

  2. Air-Drying (Wash & Go)

  3. Diffusers, Bonnet Dryers, & Hood Dryers

We don’t brush through, comb through, or rake through dry curls. This doesn’t mean we have to leave the hair alone—though some curls can be left alone and do fine, a lot of curls need some encouragement on Non-Cleanse Days.
Most of our interaction with our dry curly hair should be scrunching.

I encourage you to view the understanding and embracing of the natural movement within hair as a journey. We are moving in a direction and our hair is moving in a direction, with the hope that we can get to where we meet and sync our steps so we can journey forward together.
